FPL GW6 Preview

I got asked a question about what to do with Liverpool’s Diogo Jota (£7.7) and Man City’s Ferran Torres (£7.1) with them not gaining as many minutes as we’d like. Jota has played 343 and Torres just 303 out of a possible 450 minutes.

They are a high risk, high reward punt, that’s for sure, but one of the fundamental rules of FPL for me is this: no players scores points if they aren’t on the pitch.

Personally, I have neither, but I’m not going to tell you to sell one or both in case they do haul this week and I get it in the neck. You knew the score with these types of players (and I’d include Mason Greenwood (£7.7) in this category also), but if you are looking to offload, here is my top pick as a replacement.

In the GW4 Preview I highlighted Watford’s Ismaila Sarr (£6.1). He is second for shots on target, eighth for shots inside the box with a good run of fixtures ahead and should be on penalties now Troy Deeney has left the club. He is the Hornet’s Talisman, so is everything you want in a safe, solid midfield pick.

You may have noticed a red flag upon Patrick Bamford (£8.0), who is confirmed as injured this week. For those of you looking for a replacement, Newcastle’s Allan Saint-Maximin (£7.6) could be a good shout. Now, Newcastle do have the worst defence in the league, but they do have good fixtures, and he has been involved in 4 of their 6 goals.

Bit too out there? Fair enough, Brentford’s Ivan Toney (£6.3) has 2 goals and an assist so far, but they face Liverpool this week and have a bad fixture run ahead. As you may have gathered by now, Fixtures are the highest metric for me, especially this early in the season with such a small sample size of statistics to look at.

As for Captaincy choices, I think some caution is needed. Liverpool playing Brentford on paper would seem an easy Captaincy debate, but Brentford have been tight defensively so far, with the second best defence statistically. However, this is the first big test for the Bees, and Liverpool have been an excellent attacking side, as usual.

Man Utd welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford, with Ronaldo (£12.7) scoring 3 in his first 2 games. He sat out the midweek EFL Cup game so has fresh legs for the weekend.

Chelsea host Man City which nullifies both sets of players for Captaincy. The fixture that does stand out is West Ham travelling to an injury hit Leeds side, with one of the worst defensive records in the league. Michail Antonio (£7.9) was suspended for the last Premier League game and sat out the midweek EFL game so is fresh and ready to go.
